Council rolls out free bulky waste collections for flood victims

Charnwood borough council is offering free bulky waste collections throughout February to residents in areas affected by flooding caused by Storm Henk last month.

The free collections will be carried out in partnership with the council's contractor Serco

In partnership with its refuse and recycling partner Serco, the council has announced throughout the month of February, residents in the affected areas will benefit from a free bulky waste collection service to aid those affected by the recent flooding.

To qualify for the free collection, items must have incurred damage during the recent floods and should be placed at the property boundary by 6 am on the scheduled collection day.

The council has said Serco crews will not enter properties or gardens for collection purposes.

It strongly encourages residents to photograph damaged items before placing them for collection, as this documentation may be required for insurance claims.

Areas

The council has said the free collections will begin on 3 February and will be available to villages and towns in the area including Barrow, Cossington, Mountsorrel, Newtown Linford, Quorn, Rearsby, Rothley, Sileby, Swithland, Syston, and Thurcaston.

Loughborough residents can expect the collections to begin on 5 February.

The council outlined that it or Serco will not assume responsibility for items removed before photographic evidence is captured.

Collections will be limited to household waste such as furniture, carpets, and domestic electric appliances. However, the council wish to empathise that construction waste, including plaster, internal doors, and skirting boards, will not be considered as part of the bulky waste collection.

Residents are encouraged to either utilise their local waste disposal facility for such items or make arrangements for their collection through an authorised waste carrier.

Collections

Depending on the nature of the items, different categories of bulky waste may be collected on separate days, requiring multiple collections.

According to the council this separation is necessary for the legal disposal of items like sofas and chairs as these items may contain POPS.
