Corus helps Baylis Recycling sort mixed cans and plastic

Corus Steel Packaging Recycling is to provide new equipment to help a Berkshire recycling company separate mixed plastic and cans.

The steel reprocessor is investing revenue generated from the sale of packaging waste recovery notes (PRN) to provide Baylis Recycling with an industrial magnet system and can baler.

New equipment provided by Corus will help Baylis extract about 1,500 tonnes of steel cans a year

The Corus assistance follows the recent installation of a two-tonnes-per-hour sorting system at Baylis Recycling, which allows clients to supply post-consumer mixed waste consisting of plastic bottles and cans

The company believes the new equipment will allow it to extract about 1,500 tonnes of steel packaging each year from 5,000 tonnes of mixed plastics and cans it will receive.

Managing director Chris Baylis said the ability to reprocess mixed cans and plastics would be important in helping local authorities meet government-set recycling targets.

He said: “Our mixed stream recycling capability will help local councils to reach their recycling targets more quickly, as the weight of mixed plastic bottles and cans – the transportable tonnage – is typically 40% higher than plastics alone.”

Efficiency
Stephen Howard, Corus' recycling development representative, said: “Corus is delighted to be able to supply Baylis with new equipment to help increase the efficiency of their sorting process. The increase in extracted steel tonnages that has already been achieved is testament to the recycling performance of steel packaging materials.”

Baylis Recycling has already invested more than 3 million in its plant, with the installation of plastics washing and flaking lines earlier this year bring capacity up to 15,000 tonnes a year (see letsrecycle.com story).

Corus will be able to issue PRNs against the steel recovered through its investment in the Baylis facility. PRNs are sold by accredited reprocessors to packaging producers, who are obligated by law to invest in the recycling of packaging waste in order to help the UK reach the producer responsibility terms of Europe's Packaging Directive.
