Composting project to divert 100,000 tonnes of organic waste

London Remade is launching a composting project which will help London meet its recycling targets by diverting organic waste from landfill.

The three-year project, which will start next month, is being set up by London Remade to produce high quality compost at Cleanaway’s site in Havering, East London.

London Remade will work with Cleanaway, the London boroughs and supermarkets to ensure that it has a supply of consistent, good quality material for processing. London Remade aims to have diverted and processed 4,500 tonnes of organic waste at the site by the end of its second year and a total of 100,000 tonnes by the fourth year.

Phil Wallace, of Enviros, said: “We are currently clearing the site in East London in preparation for in-vessel and windrows composting which will be started next month. At present the compost produced on-site is used for landfill cover, but the new initiative will result in a higher quality compost. We have already set up some workshops and training sessions to show how crops can be grown and how soil can be cleaned up using compost.”

The project should result in an increase in the quantity and quality of compost produced. Research will take place into new processes and the initiative will look at composting technologies and product development. London Remade is currently looking to secure more funding to enable it to find appropriate end markets for the products.

Green waste for the site is being sourced from as wide an area as possible and over the next four years London Remade hopes to transport 40,000 tonnes of organic waste by river. Possibilities are currently being looked at with Cory Environmental and the Port of London Authority.
