Charlie Trousdell, chair of AFOR, welcomed the guidance and said after the recent bad press regarding odour and bioaerosols (see letsrecycle.com story) it was important to show the industry was “striving for zero odour”.
He said: “It is obvious odour is an issue and industry and the regulator needs to ensure that the correct systems are in place to minimise the risk of odour migration from an organic treatment facility and. in that context. a consultation process to ensure that both the regulator and industry end up with documents that are clear and workable must be a good thing.”
The draft guidance covers issues such as:
• Perception, impact and acceptability of odour
• The EA's regulatory approach
• Proposed changes to odour conditions
• The importance of odour management plans
• Risk assessments and odour monitoring
• Measures for the controlling odours
• Forms for recording levels of odour
