The funding, from Defra's Waste Implementation Programme budget, will include 1.5 million for 2004/05 and 2.5 million for 2005/06. It will support innovative community recycling projects with particular emphasis on those working closely with local authorities.
”This money shows that the government recognition of the contribution of the sector is growing. “
– Andy Moore, CRN
It is thought the government will begin consulting community sector bodies within the next four weeks on how the money should be targeted.
Speaking after the minister's announcement at the Community Recycling Network's annual conference in London, the CRN's co-ordinator Andy Moore said: “The CRN UK welcomes this money for the community recycling sector, which shows that the government recognition of the contribution of the sector is growing.”
Mr Moore said that the minister had demonstrated significant political support for the community recycling sector and that the 4 million fund would “make an important contribution to the development of the sector”.
And, the CRN co-ordinator said: “We are also hoping that, over time, the sector will see significant financial benefits from the announcement of the long-awaited review of the recycling credits system.”
