Community groups offer outlet for unwanted office equipment

Two community sector companies are set to work together to provide a recycling outlet for electronic equipment and office furniture.

Digital Links International and Green Works will be working together to offer businesses an environmentally friendly disposal solution for their computer equipment and furniture.

The companies will be specifically aiming to deal with companies that are moving offices, downsizing or replacing old equipment.

Digital Links International secures the donation of redundant PCs from private and public organisations in the UK. The company then refurbishes and provides them at low cost to schools, community centres, hospitals and social enterprises in developing countries.

Green Works was established in 2000 to provide businesses with a service to remove redundant office furniture, whilst helping out local community groups. The company also provides employment and training for the long-term unemployed and disadvantaged people.

The companies have previously worked together on a project in Ghana, which saw more than 200 computers and desks relocated to a school.

Companies and organisations already donating equipment include the Department of Trade and Industry, Barclays Bank, Ford, The Guardian newspaper and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Colin Crooks, chief executive and founder of Green Works, said: “We see this redundant equipment as a fantastic resource for schools and communities across Africa and the developing world. For us it is heart warming to see well-made products that are put to waste in this country going to help people that really need it.”
