The company has said it expects to create 400 jobs directly, with a further 200 more created by contractors supplying Celsa with services, engineering support, warehousing and logistics.
First Minister Rhodri Morgan said: “I am delighted that Celsa’s long-awaited green light to the restarting of steel-making and re-rolling at the former ASW complex in Tremorfa and East Dock has finally arrived. It was the red light for stop last July when ASW went bankrupt. It was the amber light in January. Now we finally have the green light. It is a great day for industry in Wales.”
Celsa expects to be able to employ redundant former steel workers from ASW and Corus if they meet their employment criteria, according to Welsh Assembly economic development and transport minister Andrew Davies.
Mr Davies said: “The company has clearly been encouraged at the availability of a high-quality local skill base ready and waiting to start work, and the willingness of the Assembly Government, local Government and key agencies to help bring the furnaces back to life,” Mr Davies explained.
