Cans-for-trees recycling scheme launched

Alupro has set up a novel incentive scheme to get people recycling aluminium cans – promising to plant one tree for every tonne of metal recycled.

During the year-long scheme, Alupro (the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation) estimates 35,000 trees will be planted across the UK as a result of the project. The aim of the scheme is to win over public support for metal recycling.

In the initial phase, which will begin in July 2003, local authorities and community recyclers must register the number of trees they expect to claim through taking part in the scheme in order to promote their recycling services.

Sponsorships are being sought for schools support packs, and the donation of promotional space for wide visibility of the 'get recycling' trees logo.

Aluminium packaging recycled through UK reprocessors but not claimed by collectors for their own trees will count towards regional plantings with the Woodland Trust, a leading conservation charity.

Valuable

Alupro said it started the initiative to promote the collection of “valuable but lightweight aluminium packaging” because weight diverted from landfill is “in danger of becoming the only criterion for success” in UK waste management.

Communications director Cherry Hamson said: “Aluminium is the perfect material to focus public attention on what can be achieved through getting the recycling habit. With its high value and a 95% energy saving each and every time it is returned for recycling, the message has to be – don't forget it!”
