BIR advisor Ian Cooper dies

The Bureau of International Recycling has announced the sudden death of Ian Cooper, former PR advisor of BIR and a central figure of recycling journalism, who passed away unexpectedly yesterday morning. A private family funeral will be held shortly and a memorial service is to be held in January.

For many years, Ian helped shape the image that BIR projected to the press and to the outside world. In 1972, he became a member of BIR’s Public Relations Committee, and from 1993 to 1999 he was PR Advisor, putting his impressive in-depth knowledge of the recycling industry at the disposal of our federation.

Ian Cooper had an unprecedented wealth of experience in recycling spanning twenty-five years, backed by twenty years as editor and the publisher of the UK trade publication Materials Reclamation Weekly, now Materials Recycling Week. He was also Foreign Editor of the Times Review of Industry and Technology. As a consultant, he worked on innumerable projects, many of them in the framework of European Union programmes and for the UK Government.

A spokeswoman for BIR said: “With Ian Cooper, the international recycling journalism loses one of its most symbolic figures. And all those who had the privilege of meeting and knowing him lose an exceptional friend whose warmth and kindness will never be forgotten.

“BIR expresses its deepest condolences to his wife Sue and his family.”
