Big Recycle announces June date for 2005 campaign

The team behind The Big Recycle has decided to switch this year's week-long recycling campaign to June in a bid to gain more support from retailers and local authorities.

The event aims to raise the profile of recycling among householders through localised campaign activities and press coverage.

Last year's event was staged during October, but following consultation with stakeholders the organisers have decided to hold this year's Big Recycle in the week beginning June 27.

A spokesperson for the Big Recycle told letsrecycle.com: “Over the last few months, we have consulted with LARAC and retailers, and the team is keen to expand the campaign. LARAC was keen for the campaign to be held during term-time, and retailers said it was best for them in June.”

The week is to include promotional events as well as press coverage in local newspapers, on television and radio, spear-headed by a “leading celebrity”. A dedicated website – thebigrecycle.com – will support the week's campaign. Last year's figurehead was TV impressionist Alistair McGowan.

Once again, the campaign is being backed by the Waste and Resources Action Programme this year, as well as materials recycling organisations British Glass, Corus, Novelis, PaperChain and Recoup.

Andrew Hartley, director of communications at British Glass, said: “The success of the 2004 campaign resulted from the combination of high level support from WRAP, the energy and enthusiasm of local authorities and the support of the major materials reprocessors.

“Building on this, the Big Recycle 2005 will again provide a unique opportunity to deliver these important national messages at an individual household level.”
