Biffa said the three-year deal is for the management of up to 15,000 tonnes of waste from 34 DS Smith sites across the UK.
20 waste streams are expected to be collected, including general waste, food waste, ink, mixed wood and liquid waste.
The deal will see all of the waste managed without being sent to landfill and is likely to include treatment such as incineration and recycling in accordance with the waste hierarchy.
Maxine Mayhew, chief operating officer for collections and specialist services at Biffa, said: “This is a fantastic group-wide contract that’s a real testament to the strength of our service offering as the UK’s leading sustainable waste management provider.
“We have the expertise and the infrastructure to deliver highly complex solutions for large organisations, and I’m delighted DS Smith, who share our sustainability vision and values, have trusted us to manage the waste at 34 of its sites across Scotland, England and Wales which will see zero waste sent to landfill, using more sustainable and carbon-efficient alternatives for waste that can’t be recycled.”
Paul Clarke, managing director for UK and Ireland packaging division at DS Smith, said: “We are pleased to award a zero-waste-to-landfill collection and disposal contract to Biffa for our UK Packaging division. Sustainability remains a key driver for us, and we are happy to work with an organisation that specialises in sustainable waste management solutions.
“Part of our mission is to keep materials in use for longer and we have demonstrated that by replacing more than one billion pieces of plastic over a year ahead of target. Through this new deal with Biffa, we are helping tackle one of our ‘Now & Next’ sustainability goal of sending zero waste to landfill by 2030.”
