Aylesford appointment ends WRAP hunt for paper expert

WRAP – the Waste and Resources Action Programme – has released details of the appointment of Mark Macaulay as its materials sector manager for paper.

The appointment has ended a long period where the organisation lacked any day-to-day paper expert on its staff. The post has proved one of the hardest to fill even though the postholder will have one of the biggest challenges facing WRAP – monitoring of its largest project.

Mr Macaulay, (pictured), /photos/macaulay.jpgprior to joining WRAP last month, worked for Aylesford Newsprint Ltd and his most recent role there was the project management of the UK paper industry’s first Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) application.

WRAP says that the latest appointment strengthens its materials team. The organisation said that Mr Macaulay, who has a degree in chemical engineering, will be responsible for the development of initiatives to deliver the targets for paper outlined in WRAP’s Business Plan. “With the recent completion of a major study on the potential for the UK paper and board industry to increase its recycled fibre usage, one of Mark’s priorities will be the development of a comprehensive action plan to implement a number of the study’s recommendations. WRAP’s second round of R&D; funding is also underway and he will be responsible for assessing the proposals submitted for research into paper recycling.”

Capacity
It added: “Further priorities include monitoring the progress at UPM-Kymmene (UK) Ltd’s Shotton Paper Mill, which has received capital grant funding from WRAP to deliver an additional 321,000 tonnes per annum of newsprint reprocessing capacity in the UK by 2004.”

“This is a challenging role and Mark’s wide-ranging expertise will be invaluable in developing WRAP’s future strategy for paper,” said Liz Goodwin, director of materials programmes. “To meet the targets in its Business Plan, WRAP is working to overcome the main market barriers to increasing paper recycling in the UK and I am sure Mark will make a major contribution to the successful achievement of these objectives.”
