The commingled material is sourced from households in Cheshire East and it is taken to the Cledford Lane waste transfer station. Under the award to Re-Gen the material will then be shipped to Newry, Northern Ireland for MRF sorting.
The £10.2 million lot won by Re-Gen formed part of a £15 million package of awards for the sorting of recyclables awarded by Ansa last week (13 April).
High Peak
Other lots were won by HW Martin, which won a £1.8 million contract for the processing of 10,000 tonnes per year for High Peak borough council in Derbyshire.
Biffa
Biffa picked up two lots worth £5.4 million for the processing of waste from Staffordshire Moorlands district council and Cheshire East.
Ansa
Material was previously sent to UPM’s MRF in Shotton, Flintshire, according to Ansa. The lengths of the contracts have not been disclosed but were first tendered to run between 1 Apr 2023 to 31 Mar 2026.
Ansa collects and disposes of recycling and waste from over 300,000 households and commercial premises across Cheshire East each week.
All mixed recycling under the contract is fully commingled, including glass. The joint tender was run with Alliance Environmental Services Ltd, which is a local authority trading company of High Peak borough council and Staffordshire Moorlands district council.
Expansion
The contract win marks further expansion into England from Northern Ireland-based Re-Gen waste, which runs a materials recycling facility in Newry.
The company also holds contracts in Wales.
Joseph Doherty, managing director of Re-Gen Waste, said: “We are delighted to be able to help Cheshire East council and their residents to meet their recycling targets.
“The council is listening to residents who prefer household-friendly commingled schemes which are convenient and simple to use and promote greater volumes of recycling. This contract win represents yet another success for our ambitious growth plans across England where we aim to deliver best in-class customer service and recycling performance to councils who share our vision of a cleaner future.”
