In September 2018, the council blocked plans for the 250,000 tonnes-per-year capacity facility citing concerns over its environmental impact, despite the facility being recommended for approval.
At the time, Amey said it would take its time to consider its next step, and has now announced it will appeal the decision to the Planning Inspectorate, nearly eight months after the decision was made.
Response
A company statement read: “Amey was surprised and disappointed that its planning application for an Energy from Waste facility at Waterbeach Waste Management Park was refused by Cambridgeshire county council’s planning committee.
“Having spent a considerable amount of time reviewing its options, Amey has concluded that an Energy from Waste facility at the Waterbeach Waste Management Park is still the right solution for Cambridgeshire. In particular, the proposed location, adjacent to the county’s existing waste disposal facilities, is the most appropriate because all the county’s waste is processed on site currently; providing a unique opportunity for a one-stop waste processing and recycling shop.”
Inspectorate
The Planning Inspectorate will now examine the case, and Amey says it is “confident” it will win support. Once an inspector has been assigned and the appeal registered, the Planning Inspectorate is expected to write to the authority requesting they contact all those individuals and organisations who made representation on the planning application, advising them how they can participate in the appeal process.
A council spokesperson said: “The county council’s planning, minerals and waste team has not yet received a valid planning appeal from the Planning Inspectorate.
“Once a valid planning appeal has been received, officers will review and respond to the documentation in accordance with the Planning Inspectorate’s Appeal Guidance and will ensure that all statutory parties and interested parties are sent notifications as required.”
