Alupro launches trees-for-cans campaign

Alupro has launched its trees-for-cans recycling campaign, in which a new tree will be planted for every tonne of aluminium recycled between July 2003 and the end of June 2004.

As part of the “Get Recycling” campaign to promote aluminium recycling among the public, the aluminium packaging recycling organisation is expecting to plant over 35,000 new trees in the UK.

Local authorities and community recyclers must register the number of trees they expect to claim through taking part in the scheme in order to promote their recycling services.

The campaign is being run in association with the Woodland Trust, the woodland conservation charity known in the recycling sector for its annual Christmas card recycling drive (see letsrecycle.com story). The Trust will distribute the new trees not claimed for planting by specific local authorities.

The campaign will highlight the benefits of recycling aluminium, informing the public that the process saves up to 95% of the energy used to make the metal from its raw material, bauxite; that aluminium can be recycled many times over without loss of quality and that cans that are recycled can be back on supermarket shelves again containing new drinks within six weeks.

Launching the scheme in Greenwich this week, TV personality Toyah Willcox said: “Aluminium is the perfect material to focus public attention on what can be achieved through getting the recycling habit, with its high value, and a 95% energy saving each and every time it is returned for recycling, the message has to be – don’t forget it.

“Planting 35,000 trees across the UK will be a great legacy for all new recyclers we hope to persuade to get involved.”

Trees available fro planting will be native species including oak, ash, rowan, hazel, field maple and Scots pine, available as two-year-old, cell-grown saplings sized between 45 and 60cm.

A separate programme is being run for schools, community groups and charities selling aluminium cans and foil through the 350 Cash for Cans centres across the UK. A tree will be planted for every 50kg sold, in addition to a cash value of around 40p per kg.

Alupro has said that over 100 local authorities across the UK have already registered to become involved in the “Get Recycling” campaign, claiming their trees to plant locally.
