Alistair McGowan unveiled as face of the Big Recycle

A few days ahead of the launch of WRAP's national recycling campaign, celebrity impersonator Alistair McGowan has been unveiled as the face of the UK's national recycling week, The Big Recycle.

The Big Recycle campaign will see a “high profile” week of advertising, TV and radio interviews as well as local recycling events, all kicking off on October 18.

McGowan: from Big Impression to Big Recycle

The national recycling week is being organised and funded in partnership with WRAP, the Waste and Resources Action Programme and a string of materials recycling organisations including Alcan, British Glass, Corus, PaperChain and Recoup as well as the compliance scheme Valpak.

Commenting on the core message behind the week's activities, Mr McGowan said: “We can all make a huge difference by making recycling a part of our normal routine.”

Andrew Simmons, chief executive of the plastic bottle recycling organisation Recoup, said: “The Big Recycle campaign is building at a fantastic rate – more than 300 organisations have already registered to take part. This latest celebrity endorsement is another boost.”

Confusion
Some confusion has been caused by the unveiling of Mr McGowan just a few days before WRAP is to unveil a “mystery celeb” as part of the 10 million two-year national recycling campaign, which it is running from Monday.

Clarifying the situation, a spokesperson for WRAP told letsrecycle.com: “The national advertising campaign launches on the 27th September and the first local action based initiative is the Big Recycle which will work through local authorities.”

Mr Simmons said: “We're asking all recycling officers to run some local promotions to coincide with the Big Recycle week – so that planned national campaigning and local messages combine to increase participation in recycling schemes.”
