Alcan increases aluminium can prices

Alcan Aluminium Can Recycling has increased the price paid to suppliers of used aluminium beverage cans for the first time in a year.

The increase marks a significant shift in used aluminium can prices as it is the first price change since November when Alcan reduced the price paid for cans for the third time in three months. Alcan dropped its aluminium price three times last year as a result of the weakening non-ferrous market.

But stronger demand means that Alcan has now increased its price by 30 across the board. Prices for UK UBCs conforming to specification and delivered to one of Alcan's seven regional processing centres have been increased to:

  • loose whole cans 600 per tonne
  • Loose and flattened 650 per tonne
  • Baled or densified 700 per tonne

Rick Hindley, national manager for Alcan Aluminium Can Recycling, explained that the price falls last summer were a result of the general downturn in the aluminium scrap market but he said that he was confident that prices would rise further this year.

Mr Hindley told letsrecycle.com: “This year the market has tightened as there is a general shortage of aluminium scrap. Demand seems to be stronger and we are more optimistic about prices going up this year.”

He added: “We are delighted that we are now able to increase the prices paid for UBCs. We are confident that the increase, together with aluminium’s continued domination of the beverage can market, will help to boost the Cash for Cans sector and further encourage the recovery of valuable aluminium from the waste stream by local authorities and waste management companies.”
