Gold

Kent-based construction firm FM Conway is the only organisation to receive the prestigious Gold Zero Waste Award in the second round with United Biscuits the recipient in the first round.

FM Conway won the award for its work to maximise its waste prevention efforts and has developed an in-house recycling system for its work which is largely in the roads and transport sector. It is now able to recycle a wide range of waste arisings including 100% of highways arisings such as kerbs, paving, concrete, asphalt and sub-base material.

Commenting the achievement, Michael Conway, chief executive of FM Conway, said: This Gold Zero Waste Award is a testament to our commitment to recycling and sustainability. The approach we have taken over the past 20 years has dramatically improved our environmental performance. We will soon achieve zero waste to landfill, which is a fantastic achievement for a construction company.

Congratulations

Entries were judged by: David Caro, chairman of environment policy unit at the Federation of Small Businesses; Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com, Adam Read, global lead at AEA; Camilla Woods, director of policy for the British Hospitality Association; and John Woodruff, chairman of the National Association of Waste Disposal Officers.

Congratulating the winners, Mr Eminton, said: I am delighted by the response to the Zero Waste Awards and would like to congratulate all of the winners on their achievements. It is surprising to see the extent of waste minimisation that is underway in the UK across so many different sectors. letsrecycle.com and sponsors SAICA and Wastecare are really pleased that these awards recognise these achievements.”
