H.W Martin Waste was founded over 40 years ago and has 17 sites across the UK, from Devon to North Lanarkshire.
According to a tender notice published on the government’s portal last week (9 June), the new contract with Durham will begin on 1 November 2023 and will run until 31 March 2032.
The contract value has been worked out at £78 million over the course of the entire contract. It will cover the operation, management and maintenance of 12 facilities across the region.
It will also cover the management of one ‘mobile HWRC’ across County Durham. One of the fixed locations incorporates a re-use shop and a small commercial waste facility.
HW Martin was the only bidder for the contract and held the previous contract since 2013 (see letsrecycle.com story).
Durham County Council’s strategic waste manager Jo Blackie, said: “After following our normal tendering process, we have awarded the contract to H W Martin Waste Ltd and look forward to our continued work with the company in ensuring quality re-use and recycling opportunities are available for residents in County Durham.”
Contract
Since the start of their contract with Durham county council, HW Martin says it has diverted over 97% of all waste deposited at the HWRC from landfill, introduced additional types of materials that can be recycled at the sites (such as plastics and cooking oil), and partnered with the county council in implementing a permit scheme for trade waste.
