Belfast and Biogen among 2016 Awards for Excellence winners

There were local authority winners from Belfast city council to Sutton’s Maria Kampioti at this year’s Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management ceremony held in London yesterday (19 May).

Eleven awards were presented at the event which was hosted by ITV presenter Charlotte Hawkins with Lord Deben giving the keynote address (see letsrecycle.com story).

Food recycler Biogen was crowned ‘recycling business of the year’ while other winners included the retail giant Tesco with DS Smith, also for work on food waste.

The collection crew champions were Ronnie Oakes and Fred Norris of Norse Waste Solutions in Norwich. Suez clinched the circular economy award while Recofloor gained recognition for its national recycling work.

On the south coast, the most innovative design in the waste management sector was judged to be Dorset Waste Partnership’s Bridport waste management site, while Biffa was awarded the civic amenity site of the year prize for its work at the Sheerness HWRC.

An award was also given on the production side to Kettleby Foods working with PH Hull and Sons.

Transition

WRAP’s head of resource management, Linda Crichton, representing the Award’s judges told finalists and guests at the event, held at London’s Landmark Hotel, on 19 May, that the sector was seeing a huge ‘transition’ in ideas and services.

Mrs Crichton said: “When details of all the entries arrive I sometimes worry if there will be new ideas and solutions. But, then I have no doubt because it is wonderful to see how many people are still devising new and improved ways of delivering services and communications with innovation and fresh ideas.”

Charlotte Hawkins said: “To me it is so interesting and exciting to see the very wide example of the sector, which seems to involve much more than I would ever have thought: I see we have finalists from councils, companies, charities and individuals ranging from council officers to fantastic collection crews.”

The award for Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative was awarded to Michael Ferguson and Richard Buller of Belfast city council for its zero waste action plan. The trophy was presented by Gayle Whittaker for Hadfield Wood Recyclers, with Charlotte Hawkins, to the city council.
