The money comes from the county council's Waste Collection Authorities Challenge Fund, and will fund projects to improve recycling in 2004/05 and 2005/06.
Surrey received eleven applications from the county's district and borough councils, including one group application from three councils. Most of the projects involved green waste collections and home composting.
The joint bid came from Reigate & Banstead borough council, Mole Valley district council and Tandridge district council. The county awarded 50,000 towards the 125,000 total costs for a new in-vessel composting facility to recycle household organic waste.
Commenting on the challenge fund, Dave Ricketts, waste policy manager for Surrey council, said: “The Challenge Fund was designed to help waste collection authorities hit recycling targets and to help the whole county meet its waste obligations.”
Contribution
Mr Ricketts explained: “The fund was inspired by the recent National Recycling Fund and the London Recycling Fund, both of which have channelled money directly to council-run recycling/composting schemes. All projects will be awarded funding, allocated according to their size and likely contribution towards improving the overall Surrey position.”
The Surrey funding awards for individual councils were as follows:
- Reigate & Banstead BC – Kerbside paper collections for flats – 48,500
- Guildford BC – Garden waste collection scheme – 36,900
- Runnymede BC – Waste minimisation project – 14,000
- Spelthorne BC – Green waste collection service – 89,300
- Surrey Heath BC – Green waste/cardboard collections 78,400
- Tandridge DC – Home composting scheme – 19,700
- Waverley BC – Green waste collections – 62,400
- Elmbridge – Green waste shredder – 31,800
- Mole Valley – Green waste banks for recycling centres – 29,000
- Woking BC – Subsidised wormery units – 40,000
The authorities will be awarded their allocated funds in the next two weeks and progress will be monitored by Surrey county council until March 31 2006.
