Bromley is one of twelve London boroughs which is responsible for the collection and disposal of its own waste, the other 21 are arranged into four joint waste disposal authorities. Bromley's contract with Onyx means that it is the first London borough to integrate its collection and disposal services – the company already provides street cleaning services for the council.
Onyx will now collect and dispose of the 200,000 tonnes of waste which is generated in the borough each year. The seven-year collection contract will start in November and will see Onyx collect residential, trade, clinical and bulky waste from almost 130,000 properties. Currently households in the borough only have a kerbside collection for paper but Onyx plans to expand the door-step recycling service so that it includes paper, glass, plastic and cans.
The 14-year disposal contract will start in February 2002 and Onyx is planning to build a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) as well as setting up an on-farm composting site for green waste. The council's bring banks, civic amenity sites and two transfer stations will also be managed by Onyx. Waste which cannot be recycled will be taken to SELCHP, which Onyx also operates, for incineration.
Christophe Bellynck, development director of Onyx, said: “We are extremely pleased to be awarded this prestigious London contract and proud that our best value, integrated approach has captured the imagination of Bromley Council. We are looking forward to putting it in action.”
