Since entering the waste wood recycling market in 1963, Boden’s has expanded its operations so that it now takes in around 1,400 to 1,600 tonnes of material a week. This is then chipped for use in the board manufacturing industry.
Despite its location in the intensely competitive M62 corridor, Boden’s is now expanding further with the purchase of two new machines – worth over 220,000 – shortly after buying a Doppstadt DZ 750 in July 2002.

The new machines include a new high-speed hammermill shredder, a 429hp AK 430, to work alongside the DZ 750 in processing waste wood including demolition timber and pallets. The new machine can handle around 15 to 20 tonnes of material an hour.
Charles Boden explained: “We have further expansion plans in place for the next 12 months, and the AK 430 shredder offers us the productivity and mobility we require to move these plans forward.”
Quality
Boden’s has also brought in an SM 518 trommel screen, which will screen the waste wood so the company can meet the quality demands of chipboard manufacturers.
Mr Boden said: “The new trommel screen will allow us to meet the increasingly demanding specifications laid down by the chipboard manufacturers, as well as screening a range of other waste materials, which are now coming into the site for recycling.”
Although packaging waste recovery note (PRN) prices are low at the moment as well as prices for chipboard, wood industry analysts have said there are still opportunities available for wood recyclers in alternative markets (see letsrecycle.com story). As well as animal bedding, there is good demand for wood chip from the composting industry and in the next few years the biomass sector will become important.
George Kehoe, sales director at Glaswegian wood chipping machine manufacturers Doppstadt , said: “The wood recycling sector is coming of age with the emergence of key players such as Boden’s. Productivity and the ability to meet high end product specifications are paramount, and our range of shredders and screens provide the engineering and reliability to allow operators to deliver the right product in the right volumes.”
