Sheffield’s civic amenity sites get face-lift after perception problem

Major refurbishment work causing the closure of a Sheffield civic amenity site, now to be re-branded recycling centres, will form part of refurbishment project on all five of the city’s sites. The work is being undertaken as part of a 30-year waste management contract with Onyx.

Major work on one of its largest sites at Blackstock Road Recycling site on Monday 11 November will result in its closure until March 2003. Members of the public, says the council, will be directed to other sites in the city where refurbishment has not yet started.

The council aims to complete minor changes at its High Green
and Deepcar sites, which it says should make it easier “for people to use the sites and to increase recycling.”

In addition to the collection of separated recyclables presently carried out on the sites, facilities will now include plastic and can banks as well as facilities for timber and improved ones for green waste.

All of the sites will be refurbished to increase the potential for
recycling as well as to improve access and movement of traffic through
the sites and in turn help change public perception of these sites from what the council phrased at “dump-it sites”.

Onyx Contract

The contract specifies that Onyx will deliver a range of services to help the Council to meet its waste management obligations, including: developing a Materials Recycling Facility at Beighton to sort paper and card before it goes to paper manufacturers. Onyx have also decided with Sheffield City Council to roll out kerbside collections of paper and card to approximately 200,000 households in the City; to continue with the redevelopment of a new Energy Recovery Facility at Bernard Road. Onyx also hopes to meet council targets though developing its District Heating network to allow more buildings to connect to the scheme.

The other recycling sites which are all to undergo refurbishment include Beighton Road in Woodhouse, Longley Avenue West in Shirecliffe.

Onyx’s development director Edward Thomas said about the work: “This is a significant step to help Sheffield improve its recycling rate. Householders in Sheffield will soon have a much more favourable experience when they come to use the sites. Furthermore, they can rest assured that the waste created from their garage clear out or gardening session will probably be recycled rather than being disposed of.”

Councillor Gill Furniss, Sheffield City Council's Cabinet Member for the
Environment said the refurbishment of these sites was a step forward in improving recycling rates. He said: “This signals a real step forward for Sheffield and I look forward to seeing the quantity
of waste recycled from them increase after the improvements have been
made”

All changes to opening times will be advertised on the Sheffield City Council website on: Sheffield Council or via its customer help line number: 0114 273 4567
