Waste Catalogue

The European Waste Catalogue (EWC) classifies waste materials and categorises them according to what they are and how they were produced, which is a necessary detail to be included on waste carrier and consignment notes under the Duty of Care.

The EWC is referred to in a number of European Union directives and Commission decisions regarding waste management. The UK and other Member States are fulfilling their requirement to integrate the catalogue into their domestic legislation.

One example of this in the UK is the requirement to make a reference to an EWC code on all Duty of Care Transfer Notes. The catalogue, which is comprised of around 650 separate codes divided into 20 chapters each containing a number of sub-categories, has been amended several times since the initial list of wastes was produced.

The Environment Agency’s guide to waste codes can be found here.
