Mr Forbes, who developed the Business Environmental Partnership while at Midlothian Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise, will now focus on the delivery of WRAP's Business Plan in Scotland.

His new role will see him supporting businesses looking to expand in the recycling sector and developing markets for recycled products by fostering close links with business development networks, Scottish business and the public sector.

He will also focus on securing positive relationships in Scotland and ensuring that WRAP's programmes in procurement, finance, standards and key material streams take account of Scottish developments.

Turning point

Ross Finnie, Scotland's minister for environmental and rural development, said: “The appointment of John Forbes as Scotland liaison officer for WRAP is a turning point for Scottish businesses and their environmental responsibilities. This will greatly benefit market development efforts in Scotland by further engaging local businesses and the public sector in WRAP's programmes.”

WRAP director of business and procurement programmes Steve Creed said: “We are delighted to welcome John to the team. The Business Environmental Partnership has assisted over 450 businesses in Scotland to save costs through improved environmental management, so his knowledge and understanding of small businesses in Scotland will be invaluable to us.”

Mr Forbes has been a member of the Lord Provost's Commission on Sustainable Development and helped to develop the Lothian and Borders Area Waste Plan. In 1999 he was given an award for his contribution to the environment by the Business and Environment Network Scotland.
