SAICA secures Lancashire paper contract

Paper and packaging firm SAICA Natur will reprocess 40,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard waste from households in nine Lancashire districts as part of a 12 month supply agreement with Global Renewables Lancashire Operations Ltd.

The district councils, which carry out in-house waste collections, will deliver soft mixed kerbside collected paper to one of five waste transfer stations or recovery parks operated by Lancashire waste treatment firm Global Renewables which signed a 25-year waste processing contract with Lancashire county council and Blackpool council in 2007.

Once there, it will then be sorted and collected in bulk before being transported to SAICAs PM11 paper mill in Partington, Greater Manchester.

Alternatively, it will be sent to the Spanish firms facility in Audenshaw, where it is to be baled and delivered to PM11 for processing. According to SAICA, the practice of bulking provides a carbon footprint saving with district collection vehicles able to unload within or in close proximity to district borders.

The 300 million PM11 mill, designed to produce 400,000 tonnes-a-year of 100% recycled containerboard, first produced paper in January 2012 (see letsrecycle.com story).

The mill uses recovered paper from households and businesses to create counterboard, which is sent to SAICAs box plants to be made into cardboard boxes.

Agreement

Barry Elder, senior logistics & outputs general manager at Global Renewables said: We are delighted that we have entered into a mutually beneficial supply agreement to feed a large amount of Lancashires mixed paper and cardboard into SAICA Naturs recently opened PM11 mill in Trafford Borough. We see this agreement being the beginning of a solid working relationship and hope to work with SAICA Paper to develop products that could be used within Lancashire to enjoy some closed loop success.

He added: SAICA Natur was awarded the contract as the bid demonstrated commercial best value and security of the materials being processed. In addition to this we were very impressed with the PM11 Partington mill an exciting and bold venture.

Using the facility in Audenshaw, SAICA Natur has enabled the constant flow of the loose material from the collection network making sure it is quality checked, baled and ready for delivery to the PM11 facility.
