Household hazardous waste good practice guide planned

The National Household Hazardous Waste Forum (NHHWF) is compiling the UK's first ever good practice guide to treating household hazardous waste.

The Good Practice Guide to the Collection and Treatment of Household Hazardous Waste guide will be aimed at waste managers, retailers faced with producer responsibility requirements, regulators and government departments. It will round up relevant legislation and existing household hazardous waste services and give advice on kerbside collections, recycling points, amnesty days and retailer take-back schemes.

David Hills of Grundon, who is chair of the steering group which is directing the content of the guide, said: “The WEEE Directive, Landfill Regulations and other new legislation all push for better treatment of a wide range of household hazardous wastes; the Household Waste Collections Guide will be of immense help in sharing good practice across the UK.”

The NHHWF has been awarded landfill tax funding from Wyvern Waste Management and Grundon Waste Management to research and produce the guide. The work will be carried out by environmental consultancy SWAP, which runs the NHHWF.

The guide is due to be published in June 2003. It will complement the existing NHHWF Good Practice Guide to Household Hazardous Waste Management.
