Grundon begins construction on Bristol waste transfer station

Work has begun on a waste transfer station (WTS) in St Philip’s Marsh, marking the next step of Grundon Waste Management’s expansion in Bristol.

Located on an industrial estate on the southern edge of central Bristol, the facility will form a new addition to the company’s existing premises, which it has occupied since 2019.

Philip Atkinson, Estates Director at Grundon Waste Management, commented: “This new waste transfer station is set to offer significant sustainability benefits for the Bristol business community.

“Our increased regional handling capacity will improve efficiency, resulting in lower costs for our customers, whilst improving environmental outcomes for the wastes they produce.”

Bristol site expanded

The new WTS will occupy just over a third of the four-acre site, which currently operates as an HGV depot beside Grundon’s Bristol offices.

Once operational, the facility will aim to be capable of handling up to 50,000 tonnes per year of commercial and industrial waste, collected from local businesses and customers and bulked on site before onward transport for treatment or recycling.

Alongside the main transfer building, the development includes a trailer shelter, a weighbridge and new office accommodation.

Grundon confirmed the project will create six to eight new full-time jobs, including transfer station operatives, plant operators and a weighbridge clerk. These roles will add to the 19 staff already employed at the site.

Site to open in early 2026

In 2020, Grundon initiated a formal planning process to expand the site’s functions through the development of a dedicated WTS.

The application was initially refused by Bristol City Council, prompting Grundon to appeal the decision.

That appeal was determined in 2022, when the Planning Inspectorate overturned the council’s refusal and granted permission for the project to proceed.

With approval secured, Grundon has now begun the necessary preparatory work to bring the development forward.

Construction is underway and is expected to be completed early next year.

Atkinson added: “We’ve made significant progress in developing our business in Bristol and this new facility will further establish our presence in the region.

“We are of course delighted to be investing in the local area and to be creating yet more employment opportunities.”
