The deal sees the waste company acquire around 300 trade waste customers and contracts worth an estimated £220,000 from the skip-hire specialist.

Established as a one-man operation by managing director Simon Almond in 1989, Devon Contract Waste provides commercial waste collections on behalf of businesses in the county as well as bordering Cornwall and Somerset.
In 2011, the business invested around £4 million in its ‘Envirohub’ materials recycling facility (MRF) on Marsh Barton Road, including £2 million in advanced sorting equipment. The plant is capable of handling around 75,000 tonnes of waste per year.
As well as its ‘Zero to Landfill’ service for mixed commercial waste, Devon Contract Waste also provides specialist waste management services such as data destruction, chemical and WEEE disposal and site clearances.
Wellington Waste meanwhile began life in 1984 as a similar family-run operation, starting out with ‘two members of staff, six skips and a lorry’ according to its website.
The firm, which is based in Higher Poole near Taunton, has since grown into one of the largest skip hire providers in the region – having incorporated and acquired Taunton Skips, Mountain Skips and West Somerset Skip Hire.
Devon Contract Waste confirms that the acquisition is “in-line” with its expansion plans, and aims to increase its markets share of commercial waste collections within and beyond its Devon heartland.
NRC
The firm recently became a member of the newly-established National Resource Consortium – an organisation of small and medium-sized waste businesses pooling together to bid for large commercial contracts (see letsrecycle.com story).
Commenting on the Wellington deal, Mr Almond said: “Devon Contract Waste has got exciting plans for growth over the next five years and this deal allows us to expand our unique Zero to Landfill offering into Somerset.
“We believe our new customers will be delighted with the time and resources they’re able to save by not having to separate their waste and will benefit from the excellent green credentials being part of the Zero to Landfill solution will give them.”
He added: “Whilst it’s a fantastic business move for us, we also believe it’s another step towards reducing the amount sent to landfill in the region, which we’re incredibly passionate about.”
‘Happy’
Tony Palfrey, managing director of Wellington Waste, said: “We’re very happy to have sold our trade waste division to another local family run business that can offer a Zero to Landfill solution in the Somerset area. This means we now have more time to concentrate on our core business services including skip and tipper hire.”
