Christmas campaign calls for laptop donations amid 800% surge in demand

Tech-Takeback has launched a campaign urging businesses and residents to donate unused laptops, as the charity faces unprecedented demand for digital support.

The Connected by Christmas campaign comes as applications for Tech-Takeback’s digital inclusion laptops have risen by 800% leaving the organisation warning that, for the first time, residents may need to be turned away due to a lack of available devices.

Despite everyday life becoming increasingly dependent on reliable access to technology, 21% of the local population still lack access to a suitable device, leaving thousands at risk of exclusion.

Across the UK, an estimated 22 million unused laptops are sitting idle in homes and workplaces.

Take-Techback commented: “In an increasingly online world, digital exclusion can affect every aspect of a person’s life.

“Behind every request for a laptop is someone trying to apply for a job, complete their studies, or simply stay connected to loved ones.

“With the right support, we can meet this winter’s surge in demand and ensure no one in our community is left offline this Christmas.”

Target: 300 devices back in use by Christmas

Tech-Takeback has set a goal to bring at least 300 of these dormant devices back into use before Christmas, placing them directly with people who would otherwise be offline.

Each donated laptop undergoes a full refurbishment process, including certified GDPR-compliant data erasure, repairs and upgrades, installation of Windows 11 or Chrome OS and essential productivity software. Where needed, recipients can also be provided with internet access and digital skills training.

Tech-Takeback highlighted that each refurbished device can generate up to £43,000 in verified social value, supporting employment, education, health access and community participation.

Donors will also receive impact reporting after six months, designed to feed into ESG and CSR commitments.

The charity is calling on organisations and individuals to support the campaign through three simple actions:

  • Donate devices – free, secure collection with certified data erasure
  • Fund a laptop – £120 provides a fully refurbished device for someone in need
  • Spread the word – share the campaign with colleagues, partners and networks

Tech-Takeback says that with community support, hundreds more people can be “connected by Christmas”.
