The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed it was called to the incident at around 19:20, sending six appliances, a high-reach vehicle and additional support.

A spokesperson from S. Norton commented: “We can confirm that a fire occurred at our Glasgow East site last night. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended promptly and working with our site team, brought the incident under control.

“Thankfully, no-one was injured during the incident and we would like to thank the Fire and Rescue Service for their swift and professional response.

We apologise to local residents for the disruption caused, particularly as some were advised to remain indoors during the incident.

“Our emergency procedures were followed throughout, and we have robust controls in place to mitigate the risks and effects of fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.”

Fire services on site

In a statement posted to X, SFRS said: “We have six appliances, a high reach appliance and specialist resources at a fire affecting a recycling centre on London Road in Glasgow. There are no reported casualties.

“Due to levels of smoke in the area, nearby residents are asked to keep windows and doors closed.”

London Road has been closed between Methven Street and Maukinfauld Road while emergency services continue to attend.

Police Scotland issued an update on Facebook yesterday evening confirming the closure and advising drivers to avoid the area.

The statement read: “London Road, Glasgow is closed from Methven Street to Maukinfauld Road due to a fire at a premises which was reported around 8pm on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

“Emergency services are in attendance. Residents are advised to keep their windows closed. Motorists should avoid the area if possible.”

Crews remained on site into Thursday morning, with Police Scotland Greater Glasgow stating: “Emergency services remain in attendance.”

The spokesperson from S. Norton added: “Operations at the site have now returned to normal. We kindly ask everyone to remain vigilant and help prevent future incidents by disposing of batteries safely and recycling responsibly.”

The Glasgow East site was acquired by S. Norton in 2024 as part of a larger Glasgow acquisition of sites formerly owned by Recycling Lives.

Glasgow East covers 1.9 acres and specialises in receiving ferrous and non-ferrous metals from both trade and the general public.

Both Glasgow East and River Clyde were previously owned by John R Adam, which was acquired by Recycling Lives in July 2022.

These very issues will be at the heart of discussion at the Fire and Health & Safety Conference, taking place on 23 October 2025 at the Hallam Conference Centre in London. Bringing together regulators, operators, and safety experts, the event will explore case studies, prevention strategies, and the latest innovations to help the industry strengthen its resilience – secure your early-bird ticket here.
