Biffa eyes North West growth with Blakeley’s acquisition

Waste management firm Biffa has today (29 September) agreed conditional terms for acquiring the waste collection and processing business of Wigan-based Blakeley’s Recycling Ltd.

The acquisition, which is planned to complete on 1 November 2016, is expected to add over £7 million to Biffa’s annual revenues.

Blakeley’s Recycling Ltd carries out commercial waste collections services for around 3,500 customers from its headquarters in the North West of England.

The business, which employs around 130 people, became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Martin Ainscough Holdings Ltd in 2013 – which invested an estimated £4 million in an 8-acre materials recycling facility (MRF) on Bickershaw Lane in Wigan.

Fleet

Blakeley’s, which operates a fleet of around 35 vehicles, also offers its customers landfill diversion with facilities to produce and bale refuse-derived fuel (RDF) at the site for export to Europe.

The family-run firm also has its own food waste collection service, with the material collected separately and processed at ReFood’s nearby 120,000 tonnes-per-year anaerobic digestion plant in Widnes.

Once Blakeley’s has been fully integrated into Biffa’s industrial and commercial division, Biffa claims it will have ‘signficantly enhanced’ its waste service offering in the North West region.

Transaction

Ian Wakelin, chief executive of Biffa, said: “This transaction provides further demonstration that Biffa is a natural consolidator in the industry, with the technology, scale, reputation and expertise to grow and build upon our market leading positions in the UK.

“We look forward to welcoming Blakeley’s people to Biffa, and to working together to provide our customers with a best in class service.”
