Yorkshire and Humberside councils fund regional recycling study

Work on a new strategy that will form the keystone for waste minimisation, recycling and other waste management options in Yorkshire and Humberside is getting underway.

The Regional Chamber for Yorkshire and Humberside together with partners is to prepare an Integrated Waste Management Strategy for the region. This is said to be the first time that waste management has been approached in a structured and regional way for the two areas and funding for the study is coming from local authorities.

Speaking as the project was announced Clive Leach, Deputy Chair of the Regional Chamber said: “Our goal is to develop a fully integrated &#39c;radle-to-the-grave' waste management strategy for the whole region. By working closely with all of our partners we will ensure that the interests of commerce, the waste industry, the voluntary sector, local authorities and the public are taken into account. This strategy will ensure that Yorkshire and Humberside is able to manage its waste in effective and sustainable ways that bring clear economic, social and environmental benefits for the whole region.”

MEL Research of Birmingham, in association with Professor Chris Coggins, have been commissioned to gather information about waste production and will be developing a range of options for how the region's waste can be managed over the next twenty years.

The first stage of the work will take six months to complete and will take a wide ranging look at waste and waste management in the region. It will examine the environmental, social and economic implications of current approaches to waste management and minimisation; review current good practice in this region and beyond; and consider new and innovative ways of working.

New jobs

The final strategy will provide a comprehensive and realistic set of proposals that will enable local authorities to reach and exceed their present and future waste management targets and help businesses meet their waste management responsibilities. It will help businesses become more competitive, assist in the creation of new jobs and businesses for waste handling and processing, and stimulate a robust market for recyclables in the region.

Speaking about their appointment Bob Pocock, Chief Executive of MEL Research, said:
“We are very pleased to have been commissioned to undertake this work. This is a unique opportunity for the Regional Chamber to improve the environment and people’s quality of life right across the region. By working together we can make sustainable waste management a reality in Yorkshire and Humberside.”
