The IWM has criticised Greenpeace’s actions and called the protest “irresponsible”. The Institute issued a statement which said: “We support the integration of all appropriate technologies which will help to meet the obligations under the landfill directive and waste strategies, and energy from waste will have a major role in this objective.”
The Greenpeace protesters who had been occupying the incinerator since Tuesday left the site last night following yesterday’s High Court decision in Leeds.
As letsrecycle.com reported, the ruling instructed Greenpeace to withdraw its occupation of the incinerator which it had accused of being the “worst” in England.
Sheffield City Council has said that it will sue Greenpeace for damages following the protest.
Bob Kerslake, chief executive of Sheffield City Council, said: “The council is determined to recover the costs of this protest through legal action against Greenpeace. This pointless protest has cost the people of Sheffield an estimated £250,000. It is unacceptable that they should have to pay for this illegal action.”
The council said that it is working as quickly as possible to reopen the incinerator, which should be functioning normally by Monday.
