The waste management company will provide portable compactors for waste as well as white paper, cardboard and glass recycling. Collection of all waste and recyclables will be carried out using 820-litre containers provided by Worcestershire-based Taylor.
The new contract is the result of a waste strategy drawn up by the Birmingham Alliance, a partnership of companies formed in 1999 to redevelop the 40-acre site the Bullring now occupies. Onyx won the contract with a proposal produced with Europa Facility Services.
Commenting on the new deal, Onyx regional sales manager Stuart MacPhail said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this prestigious contract and we aim to ensure that shoppers will be treated to one of the cleanest retail experiences in the country.”
Birmingham's Bullring centre was built at a cost of 500 million and includes over 140 shops and restaurants throughout an area equivalent to 26 football pitches. Onyx Birmingham was required to cope with waste produced at the opening of the centre, when an estimated 10% of Birmingham's population passed through the centre's doors.
