Biffa opens hazardous transfer depot in Hertfordshire

Biffa has opened a new hazardous waste transfer station in Welham Green, Hertfordshire, with a capacity of 5,000 tonnes a year.

The site deals with both hazardous and difficult non-hazardous materials from Biffa’s customers

The depot aims to boost Biffa’s operational capacity in the home counties and south of England, while also reducing its carbon footprint.

The site deals with both hazardous and “difficult” non-hazardous materials from Biffa’s customers across sectors including manufacturing, retail, logistics, utility and warehousing sectors. The depot also includes a “proof zone” for flammable waste.

Welham Green will add to Biffa’s national network of specialist waste services, which now has eight transfer stations, six treatment facilities and what is said to be one of the largest tanker fleets, including ADRs – specialist vehicles used for transporting certain hazardous waste.

The Welham Green depot aims for fewer vehicle journeys, with Biffa hoping to save almost 930 tonnes a year.

‘Sustainable solutions’

Simon Dale, Biffa’s specialist services regional general manager, said: “Our new transfer station at Welham Green means we now have the capacity to offer our customers in the South of England a much simpler and more sustainable solution to their hazardous and difficult non-hazardous waste requirements.

“Having a larger, centralised hub for our South East operations also means our trucks are travelling fewer miles, resulting in significant fleet-related carbon savings that help reduce our customers’ Scope 3 emissions and contribute to our own journey to net zero.

“Alongside hazardous materials, our specialist services team also handles large-scale construction and event waste, as well as providing food and packaging solutions and tailored services for manufacturers.”

Steve Dorrington, process lead engineer at Britvic, said: “Biffa’s team of technical experts seamlessly handled Britvic’s liquid waste, with support in waste management documents, identification and efficient tanker collection and recycling.

“Biffa helped with process alignment and focused on recovering as much of the waste as possible, all while guaranteeing environmental compliance and safe disposal. Their dedication to provide efficient and sustainable waste management has been invaluable to our soft drinks business and process operations.”
