Environment Agency waste policy chief to head CIWM

The Environment Agency is to lose its head of waste policy, Steve Lee, who is taking up position as chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management.

After being appointed by the President and General Council of the CIWM, Mr Lee is expected to take up the position in September 2003. Widely respected in the industry, Mr Lee will take with him over twenty years’ experience in the waste management sector.

Accepting the position, Mr Lee said, “I am delighted to be offered this opportunity. These are great times for waste and environmental issues and I look forward to leading the Institution through its next stages. Mike has left a strong platform for development and now it’s my turn to continue to raise the status, value and importance of CIWM”.

National

Representing the Environment Agency at national level for five years, Mr Lee has been integral to prioritising waste management and developing a more strategic approach to waste regulation. His work has included preparations for the Landfill Directive and the December 2002 National Audit Office investigation hearing into the Agency’s waste division (see letsrecycle.com story).

Mr Lee replaces Mike Philpott, who has been chief executive since 1996, when he retires in September.

Commenting on the appointment, the CIWM President Peter Ager said: “We are delighted that such a high profile and well respected figure in the waste industry will take the lead in September and build on Mike’s success. Steve certainly has the capabilities, vision and profile to take the Institution into the next level and lead the industry forwards in maintaining high standards, professionalism, and developing more sustainable management of wastes.”
