Greater Manchester Waste will be responsible for the collection of household waste and collections from local businesses and will take over the 3 million a year waste collection contract from Manchester-based Focsa Services (UK) on April 1. The contract is for a minimum four years with an option to extend for up to a further two years.
The new contract includes plans to introduce a separate collection of green waste for composting in the autumn. It is hoped that the scheme will result in more than 12,000 tonnes of waste being recycled. The collections will be phased in over approximately 12 months.
Councillor Neil Derbyshire, executive member with responsibility for the environment, said: “In a recent survey, over 85% of households said that recycling garden waste was importance and it will take us another step forward in meeting out challenging recycling targets.”
Greater Manchester Waste will also be piloting an extension of the present paper recycling service to include other materials, such as glass and cans, for 10,000 householders during the summer.
Steven Jenkinson, managing director of Greater Manchester Waste, said: “We are looking forward to providing residents of Stockport with a high quality refuse and recycling service.”
