As part of the new five year contract, worth £1.5 million, Yorwaste will continue to provide a general waste and mixed recycling collection and processing service for the University of York.
This involves the collection of 6,500 dry mixed recycling, glass recycling and general waste bins across the University Campus.
The University has taken up the option of extending the contract, which was won by Yorwaste in 2015.
Commenting on the contract extension, Gill Mulroe, Yorwaste commercial manager, said: “As the contract is very service specific we are delighted to have been awarded the contract until 2022.
“It is real testament to the crew who deliver this service day in, day out, addressing any challenges that arise, meeting our key performance indicators and providing excellent customer service.
“We are a local service provider, employing local people and this contract is therefore very important to us.”
Organic waste
Yorwaste also recently started collecting green waste from the University. The company said this waste is taken for processing and transformed into ‘Yorganics’ – a 100% recycled, peat-free compost. The University receives bags of compost in return.
“This is an excellent example of close loop recycling,” Ms Mulroe said. “Alongside this, the University’s general, non-recyclable waste is now delivered to the energy recovery facility at Allerton Park, where it is converted into green electricity, providing the University with the most sustainable and cost effective solution.”
As well as providing waste and recycling services, Yorwaste said it is also supporting students undertaking environmental studies, including facilitating visits to its local sites, such as Harewood Whin, near York.
Contract
Mark Clough, environmental manager for the University of York, said: “We are pleased to extend our contract with Yorwaste, which is a testament to their positive and continually improving performance on the contract.
“Yorwaste have helped supplement the various recycling initiatives that we have implemented across the University, adding benefit to our staff and student experience, and diverting all waste from landfill.
“We look forward to continuing to work with Yorwaste to provide effective sustainable solutions to the University’s waste management.”
Yorwaste is owned by North Yorkshire County Council and City of York Council. The company reportedly manages over half a million tonnes of waste per year, employing over 350 staff.
