UK waste industry developing its recycling role

The waste management industry, through its trade body, the Environmental Services Association is set to produce a series of factsheets showing how the sector is rapidly developing its recycling role.

ESA senior policy executive Andy Ainsworth said: “Our involvement in this work reflects the changing face of the industry. Our members our coming up with innovative schemes to help local authorities meet the variety of challenges they are facing as the look to meet recycling targets and landfill diversion requirements.”

To further show the work of the sector and to explore ideas from across other areas the association is holding an event in London next week, “Best Practice in recycling: Partnerships for success.”

“This event,” said Dr Ainsworth, “comes out of the fact that there are an awful lot of good projects out there that people don't know abut, such as Cory's recycling with Carrick district council in Cornwall. Working with the rural authority, Cory has turned round the recycling rate.”

The event, to be held at the New Connaught Rooms on December 8 will be chaired by Norman Baker, shadow environment secretary for the Liberal Democrats.

Speakers will include Judith Turner of Onyx Sheffield, who will discuss how to bring about recycling success in a large English city, as well as Dave Newell of Norfolk Environmental waste Services, who will look at recycling at a county level. Greg Clementson of G&P; Batteries and Clare Atkinson from Lancashire county council will look ahead to the forthcoming EU Batteries Directive. And, WRAP will discuss its role providing local authority support.

The event costs 95+vat per ticket and further information and booking is by contacting Diane Young, tel: 020 7591 3205, email d-young@esauk.org.
