The notice was issued on 8 October 2026 and took effect immediately, restricting the operator from carrying out certain waste handling and treatment activities in a specific area of its Little Hulton, Greater Manchester site, which was identified as the source of the smell.
The operator has also been ordered to remove waste from the affected area by 13 November.
The EA received 52 complaints from members of the public about offensive odours in the Little Hulton area between 25 September and 5 October 2026, although local residents reported that the smell has been going on for years.
An investigation was launched at the start of October, announcing that it is “monitoring levels” in Little Hulton following the reports.
The partial suspension notice requires Kenny Waste Management to carry out odour monitoring and introduce measures to control the smell.
Failure to comply with the requirements of the notice is an offence.
Jeni Brittlebank, Area Environment Manager at the EA, said: “Communities should not have to tolerate offensive odours and we know that it’s having a significant impact on those living, working and going to school in the area of Little Hulton.
“Ensuring waste is managed in a way that protects people and the environment is our priority.
“We’ll continue to monitor the situation in the area closely and we won’t hesitate to consider further action against those believed to be responsible if the situation does not improve.”
