Currently operations director for SITA UK’s Industrial and Commercial division, with a focus on recycling and compliance with regulatory standards, Mr Jones will take the reigns from October 1 2008.
Mr Jones has worked for the SITA Group since 1989 and was appointed to the UK company board in July 2006. During his time with SITA, he has has held several positions working on the business development of the waste activities in Great Britain, France and Sweden, being appointed CEO of SITA Sweden in 2003.
Mr Hjort has been SITA UK chief executive since April 2003 and has helped to reorganise the firm into two divisions based in Maidenhead (see letsrecycle.com story), secure major contracts including a 28-year PFI deal in Northumberland and take over one of the UK’s largest metal recycling firms, Easco. He has also acted as chairman for a year for the Environmental Services Association (ESA).
Mr Hjort will now be returning to his family in his native Sweden, where he was formerly chief executive for SITA Sweden. He will remain with SITA UK’s parent company, Suez Environnement, as chairman of SITA Scandinavia and a member of the Advisory Board of SITA UK and a member of the Executive Committee.
He will continue to report to Christophe Cros, chief executive of Waste Europe for Suez Environnement and chairman and chief executive of SITA France.
SITA UK is a subsidiary of the Suez Environnement group, which was listed on the French stock exchange in July after its divestment from parent DGF Suez, formed by the merger of Suez with Gaz de France (see letsrecycle.com story).
