
Mr Burrows-Smith will take up the role on Friday (April 1). He has been Viridors northern regional director since 2007and this position will now be taken on by John Viviani, who was formerly Viridors regional director South East and managing director of the companys materials trading arm, Viridor Resource Management.
As a result of the move, other appointmentshave also beenconfirmed as:
- Herman van de Meij, Viridors commercial sales director, assumes operational responsibility for Viridor Resource Management.
- Graham Warren ,formerly Viridors regional director South West, becomes regional director, South East.
- Richard Jenkins is announced as regional director, South West. He was previously bid manager for the Greater Manchester PFI contract project.
Board
Mr Burrows-Smith will join longstanding Viridor board members Mike Hellings, who isthe company’smanaging director, and Colin Drummond, Viridorchief executive.

He willalso joinmore recently-appointed board members including finance director Andrew Kirkman – whowill replaceDavid Robertson from April 1uponMr Robertson’sretirement – and Simon Catford who was appointed corporate responsibility and regulatory director in December 2010 (see letsrecycle.com story). In the same month, Juniper consultancy founderJoe Schwager was also appointed as a non-executive director on the Viridor board (see letsrecycle.com story).
Viridor said the latest appointment was designed to strengthen its operational structure in light of recent growth and help it todevelop its business further.
Commenting on the appointment, Mr Drummond said: The expansion of the Viridor board, and our revised and strengthened operation structure, is in line with our strategic ambitions. It is designed to enhance Viridors overall capabilities, especially in the winning and operation of large contracts and the development and delivery of essential recycling and waste management infrastructure and services for our customers.
During his time as Viridors northern regional director, Mr Burrows-Smith s duties included overall operational responsibility for the Greater Manchester PFI waste contract and the integration of several recent recycling-led acquisitions including Adapt Recycling (see letsrecycle.com story), Waste Management Ltd (see letsrecycle.com story) and Swinnerton Environmental (see letsrecycle.com story). He has over 15 years executive experience within the waste and recycling sector. In his new role, he will be responsible for all Viridor operations.
