The Taunton-based company was unable to disclose how much Waste Management Ltd was bought for, however, the operation had a turnover of over £4 million-a-year.

The business, which is located in the Trafford Park area of the city, comprises a paper sorting and baling facility and, prior to the Viridor acquisition, served SME businesses in Greater Manchester and the north of England.

Waste Management Ltd's 22 employees will now join Viridor and continue operating the 3,000 tonne-a-day capacity facility.

The acquisition builds on Viridor's existing presence the in the North West, after it signed a £3.8 billion PFI contract with the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority in April alongside equity investors, Laing (see letsrecycle.com story). However, Viridor was unable to say whether the acquisition would be used to help deliver its commitments under the contract.

Mark Burrows Smith, Viridor's northern regional director, said: “The acquisition of this quality paper collection and recycling business will be an excellent addition to our existing operations in the north. There are obvious synergies with our services in Greater Manchester. ”

He added: “We welcome our new colleagues and look forward to delivering these essential recycling services to new and existing customers across the region”.

The Waste Management Ltd deal is the latest in a number of Viridor acquisitions the most recent being the purchase of Skelmersdale-based plastics recycler, Intercontinental Recycling for £8.1 million in July (see letsrecycle.com story).
