It is understood that after the official site visit, Recresco made the decision to stop reprocessing this form of glass in March 2026.
The suspension notice was officially served on 9 July 2026 for a tonnage band of “over 10,000 tonnes”.
“Glass Other” refers to glass from a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) that is not fit for remelt, including aggregates.
A source told letsrecycle.com was told that the company is now holding onto approximately 6,000 tonnes of glass which cannot be reprocessed at its site.
Recresco’s main operations will continue, including the reprocessing of MRF glass for remelt, and a spokesperson for the company said that the suspension has had “no practical impact”.
It is understood that the company will continue with its reprocessing of Glass Other if the suspension is lifted.
The development will see other reprocessors having to find additional capacity to reprocess the displaced tonnage domestically.
The Ellesmere Port plant is the company’s largest facility, covering approximately 12 acres, and has a reprocessing capacity of approximately 120,000 tonnes per annum.
It was acquired in 2020 by Recresco, after the company had occupied the site on a lease basis since 2008.
The site has primarily processed glass sourced from MRFs, with the recycled glass cullet supplied to bottle manufacturer Encirc for remelt.
Recresco was acquired by Portugal-based BA Glass at the end of 2023.
The company has headquarters in Nottingham and operates another site in Cwmbran, South Wales.
