Glass recycler Recresco acquired by BA Glass group

Multinational glass manufacturer BA Glass has announced that it has acquired glass recycler Recresco.

Recresco is one of the largest glass recyclers in the UK

The companies reached an agreement on 7 December to incorporate the glass recycler into the BA Glass Group.

BA Glass is considered the fourth largest glass packaging producer and has a turnover of around €1.6 (£1.3) billion annually. It operates 14 glass plants in across Europe including Portugal, Spain, and Germany.

Recresco was set up set up by Alan Gent in Norfolk in 1973 and it claims to have been the first recycling company to sort glass by colour and the first to take glass sourced from materials recycling facilities (MRFs).

The company has headquarters in Nottingham and operates another site in Cwmbran, South Wales. The Ellesmere Port site facility is its largest, covering approximately 12 acres.

Opportunity

Tim Gent, Recresco’s general manager said: “Partnering with BA represents a unique opportunity for our team to participate actively in future recycling projects in other geographies, where BA Group has its operations, leveraging our know-how and experience in the recycling of glass”.

BA Glass highlighted that the inclusion of Recresco provides an opportunity to advance the Group’s existing recycling endeavours by using the expertise of Recresco’s team through collaborative efforts.

Sandra Santos, CEO of BA Glass commented: “The acquisition of Recresco is an extremely valuable opportunity to access high-quality recycled glass, representing a significant step towards our goal of reducing 50% of CO2 emissions by 2035. Incorporating a higher % of recycled glass in our products, will allow us to be nearer to close the glass loop and make the glass the most sustainable packaging material in the world.”
