Portsmouth’s weekly waste allowance returns to normal

Portsmouth residents’ weekly general waste allowance returned to normal today (19 April), having been increased during the lockdown to encourage people to stay at home.

The limit was increased by one additional bag of rubbish per household at the start of the second lockdown on 5 November, to help people to manage their waste disposal when movement was more restricted and more people were at home.

Portsmouth city council will now take only a single wheelie-bin or three bags of waste from ‘flat-fronted properties’ per week. Any extra rubbish will not be collected, except in circumstances where individual households have agreed extra capacity with the council.

Portsmouth residents are encouraged to take any extra waste to the household waste recycling centre (HWRC) at Port Solent.

Colette Hill, assistant director of neighbourhoods at Portsmouth city council, said: “We relaxed the allowance for rubbish during lockdown when more people were spending time at home.

“We are now on the road out of lockdown and returning services to the way they were before lockdown”

“We are now on the road out of lockdown and returning services to the way they were before lockdown.

“We understand that there will be a period of adjustment and there are options available if you have extra rubbish. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we head out of lockdown.”

If residents have any extra bags to be collected, they can purchase stickers that will allow these to be taken as well. Stickers cost £24 for a sheet of 12.

Domestic waste services in Portsmouth are carried out by Biffa Municipal Ltd, after the waste management company was awarded a two-year extension to an eight-year contract which first began in October 2011 (see letsrecycle.com story).

Residual waste is collected weekly in Portsmouth and taken to a nearby energy from waste (EfW) plant to be burnt, where enough electricity is produced to power 20,600 homes.

Recycling is collected fortnightly. The council is currently trialling food waste collections at 24,000 households across the city.
