The company will be taking over from SITA on April 1, 2005, providing kerbside collection services for 67,675 properties, bring bank servicing as well as commercial, bulky and clinical waste collections.
Onyx will be introducing wheeled bins and alternate week collections of residual and green waste as well as fortnightly collections of dry recyclables including paper, glass, cans and plastics.
Councillor Fred Jackson, Blackpool's portfolio holder for urban environment, said the contract would be a “good opportunity to revamp Blackpool's refuse collection systems in line with developments across the country”.
Cllr Jackson said: “The main aim is to make it easier for all households to recycle their rubbish. Many households do not have access to recycling services, however with the new system of collection residents will be able to recycle on their doorstep.”
Prestigious
Commenting on the contract win, Onyx chief executive Cyrille du Peloux said the company was looking forward to working with the council on the “prestigious” contract “to develop refuse and recycling services for the residents of Blackpool”.
Onyx said it was confident that new wheeled bin collections and recycling facilities would make residents want to do their bit to minimise their waste.
Blackpool generated 92,172 tonnes of waste in 2003/04, including 7,402 tonnes of commercial (trade) waste. Of this material, 13,871 tonnes of household waste was recycled to give the council a 16% household waste recycling rate. In the first year of the Onyx contract, the waste management company will have to increase this rate to 18% to meet Blackpool's government-set recycling target.
