Onyx acquires Shanks&#39 Yorkshire commercial waste operations

Onyx Environmental has announced its acquisition of Shanks Group's Yorkshire dry waste collection business.

The acquisition of the commercial waste operations covering West Yorkshire includes business worth 2.8 million from 800 customers, a waste transfer station in Bradford, 19 employees and nine collection vehicles.

Cyrille du Peloux, chief executive of the Onyx Environmental Group, said: “This acquisition will play a key role in growing our business in West Yorkshire and provide the correct infrastructure and critical mass to meet future challenges in both the public and private sectors.”

Onyx already provides commercial waste services in the Yorkshire region with dry waste collections in the Leeds area.

The company is also the contractor for Sheffield city council's 30-year integrated waste management contract, which has seen Onyx invest into waste recycling and treatment infrastructure in the region including a new 2 million materials recycling facility opened earlier this year (see letsrecycle.com story).

  • This announcement has come as Shanks' shareholders give the final approval for the sale of its landfill and landfill gas operations to Terra Firma, parent company of Waste Recycling Group (see letsrecycle.com story).
